We have used Duet companions for four years to help care for my dear wife, who was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s in her early 50s.  Each companion brought energy, empathy and creativity that enabled her to live a full life while I continued to work full-time.  She looks forward to her companion’s arrival every morning, and each one communicates well with me to provide seamless care.  The agency also was worked with me to adjust staffing as our care needs have evolved.

All of the companions we have worked with have been carefully matched to fit our family member’s needs in terms of qualifications, areas of interest, and personality.  It has been a joy to hear on a regular basis of the ways they fill the days with exercise, intellectual stimulation, fun and laughter.  They are part of a team, always bouncing new ideas around, and are keenly interested in making the days of the client interesting and pleasant.  Each one has made a personal mark on her life – from museum trips designed to stimulate her senses, to creating a day of dance with a fellow dance professional, to games designed to enhance cognitive skills, to just being a friend with a kind word.  All are gentle, thoughtful, and truly devoted.  The companions are also always on the alert for situations requiring our attention, and keep in regular contact to ensure we are always fully informed.  We have enjoyed detailed stories from the companions on a regular basis of daily adventures, and on more than one occasion also been informed of issues of concern which allowed us to take immediate action.  The caring is not feigned – it’s definitely real, and has helped the family members learn better ways of communicating and making the one with Alzheimer’s happy and calm. Our loved one calls them “friends,” and after seeing them in action, this is clearly true.

Duet came in and changed my whole family’s life for the better, including the member in need of care, in what seemed like overnight! We’ve been working with Duet for a couple years now. Our mom has Alzheimer’s, and we were really struggling with getting her care that kept her dignity and sense of humor in place. My association with Duet Home Care of New York began last November in order to give my husband every chance to extend the Early Dementia phase of his illness. His doctor had stressed the importance of intellectual and social stimulation as well as physical activity. The Director, made it his responsibility to know my husband well so that there was high quality continuity of care when we needed a substitute companion. Duet was also available at a very inconvenient time to help me through an extremely difficult event. My mom is a true New Yorker, always was and always will be. When she was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s many things started to blur, aside from her love for the city and deep-rooted memory of her upper east side neighborhood, Central Park, the theater, etc. At the time, Covid had shut down most of the world and nowhere was safe, especially nursing homes.
